I’m Melissa.
I work with businesses, nonprofits, and foundations to strategize and execute their communications goals from start to finish. I build brand awareness and help launch meaningful campaigns through program management, event planning and producing, earned media, partnerships, design, and more.
I work closely with my clients to support their vision of reaching audiences through the best communication tools and as a result, creating long-lasting impact. With my multifaceted experience, I am interested in utilizing my mission-driven communications skills to combine my passion for storytelling and food through social impact and program development.
Background
I have ten years of experience working as a communications strategist, managing and executing campaigns to advance my passion for social impact and storytelling. Sprinkled in between are my personal endeavors that have allowed me to gain new perspective on the importance of building global online and offline communities in order to create space for women of color to thrive.
My experience started in entertainment marketing where I gained a critical understanding of publicity and promotion through client relationships and developing strategies to increase audience engagement in various film markets across California and the Bay Area. I eventually pivoted from entertainment marketing to progressive communications where I developed my love for writing.
After graduating from the University of San Francisco, I found myself in the heart of Silicon Valley working in product data development. I provided qualitative data to team of engineers identifying gaps in business procedures and creating solutions to improve the user experience. At the core of my work was building diverse and inclusive online tools and developing technology to be utilized by all, not a few.
I spent two years working with clients focused on influencing the way people think and respond to political and social issues. I drove the strategy for forward-thinking branding and messaging, managing several event activations, digital media campaigns, and earned media for clients in the following spaces: philanthropy, homelessness and housing, immigration, education, environmental conservation, and fundraising.
I spent over two years managing the customer and data storytelling program at Gusto, building relationships with internal and external stakeholders to uplift the voices of the underserved. I also worked on the internal communications team where I partnered with key stakeholders to ensure we’re building a world where work empowers a better life.
Most recently, I spent the past 8 months working as an Events Specialist at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) supporting the Student Academic Affairs and Graduate Division. I managed and led events ranging from new student orientation where we oriented over 300 students and commencement where we supported over 150 to walk in their commencement ceremony in front of 700+ loved ones.
Sprinkled in between, I traveled for 10 months in 2023 across three continents which expanded my passion for storytelling and community building. Now, I’m looking for opportunities that allow me to continue to build connection, community, and serving the underserved.
